Upper East Side Bachelor’s Apartment
WHAT: Soft renovation of a 2-bedroom “developer-special” apartment
CHALLENGE: This apartment needed little in the way of reconfiguration, but it was a sheetrock box that had zero character and lacked spatial focus. The client, an anesthesiologist, wanted us to transform what felt “like an operating room” into a cozy home, showcasing his passion for guitars and art by local artists whom he likes to support. He also needed ample storage for his motorcycle gear.
SOLUTION: The first strategy was quite subtle: enlarging certain wall openings while narrowing others, and adding a closet volume in the dining area. I redefined volumes and spaces, and let the eye travel through the apartment in a more dramatic way. Collaborating with interior designer Karen Wright, we added a wood-clad focus wall and several built-ins in deep jewel colors, as well as window treatments to soften the space.
